Syllables are hyphenated and spelled the way an English reader says them: ah (father), eh (bed), ee (see), ih (sit), oh (go), oo (food), uh (cup), aw (law), ay (day), ai (Thai), ow (cow), oy (boy), ew (few). Consonants are plain English sounds (kh as in "Khan"). Capitals mark the stressed syllable in languages with clear word stress (Spanish, Swahili, Portuguese…) and are left off where stress isn't the point (Korean, Hindi, French, Chinese, Thai). Edit freely.
